To get more impressions on Twitter (X), write posts that strangers in the For You feed stop for and reply to. X ranks every post by how likely each viewer is to react, and replies, quotes, shares and follows count for far more than likes. So the fixes are a first line that makes sense to someone who doesn’t know you, one idea per post, a reason to reply, answering your replies fast, and posting every day without stacking posts on top of each other.

Below: what an impression is, why posts stall, and nine fixes, each tied to what X’s published ranking code says.

## What is an impression on Twitter?

An impression is one time your post was shown on someone’s screen: in a feed, in search, on your profile or in a reply thread. X counts it whether or not they read it. On a post, the number next to the chart icon is its views, and X’s analytics shows impressions per post and per day.

Impressions are not followers. A post can reach many more people than follow you if X shows it in For You, and it can reach only a small slice of your followers if it doesn’t.

## Why are my impressions so low?

Usually because the post never leaves your own followers. Most founders and creators hit the same wall: a post goes out, a few followers see it, it gets a handful of likes and stops at a few hundred impressions.

The cost is bigger than one post. Every post that stalls tells you nothing about what your niche wants, so the next one is a guess too. Weeks go by, the posts keep stalling, and posting starts to feel like talking to an empty room.

What decides it is ranking. X’s For You feed predicts, for each viewer, how likely they are to like, reply, repost, quote, share, follow you, or mute you, and adds those predictions up with weights. Posts with low predicted reactions don’t get shown to more people. The full picture is in [how the X algorithm works](https://kalen.si/blog/x-algorithm).

## How does X decide who sees a post?

X publishes the code of its For You ranking on GitHub. As of October 2026 it shows a few things that matter for impressions:

| What the code shows | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| A reply is weighted 5, and 20 when it comes from someone you follow back; a like is 0.66 | A post that starts a conversation is worth far more than one that collects likes |
| Sharing by DM is 5, sharing via a copied link is 20, following the author is 4 | Posts people send to a friend, or follow you for, travel furthest |
| “Not interested” is about -52, mute about -59, report -234 | Bait and off-topic posts can cost more than they earn |
| Posts older than 48 hours are filtered out of For You | A post has about two days to find its audience |
| An author’s extra posts in one viewer’s feed are scaled down, to a floor of a quarter | Ten posts in an hour compete with each other |
| Posts from accounts the viewer doesn’t follow are scaled by 0.75 | Strangers need a stronger post to see you |

These weights multiply predicted odds, not public counts, so “one reply equals 7.5 likes” isn’t how it works. And the trained model isn’t public, so no one can compute a post’s score from outside. What the code does give is direction.

## How do you get more impressions on Twitter?

**1. Write the first line for a stranger.** For You shows your post to people who don’t know you. The first line has to make sense and give a reason to stop with no context: the claim, the number, the result. See these [Twitter hooks examples](https://kalen.si/blog/twitter-hooks-examples).

**2. Post about what your niche is already discussing.** X reads what a post is about when it decides whom to show it to. Topics your readers are talking about this week find them faster than a topic from a blank page. [Find what works in your niche on X](https://kalen.si/blog/find-what-works-in-your-niche-on-x).

**3. Give people a reason to reply.** A clear opinion, a specific question or a choice between two options gets replies. A finished thought with nothing to add gets a like at best.

**4. Answer your replies in the first hour.** A reply you answer turns into a conversation, and replies between people who follow each other carry the highest reply weight in the code. More in [Twitter reply strategy](https://kalen.si/blog/twitter-reply-strategy).

**5. Write posts worth sending.** Shares by DM and by copied link carry more weight than reposts. A checklist, a template, a sharp take on today’s news: the kind of post someone sends to a friend with “this”.

**6. Keep the link in the first reply.** The published filters show no link penalty, but a link pulls readers off the post before they react. Keep the main post complete on its own and put the link under it. [Why the first reply works for links](https://kalen.si/blog/x-first-reply-link).

**7. Space your posts.** The code scales down each extra post from the same author in one person’s feed. Post every day, but leave time between posts instead of five in ten minutes. [How often should you post on X](https://kalen.si/blog/how-often-should-you-post-on-x) and [best time to post on X](https://kalen.si/blog/best-time-to-post-on-x) cover the pace.

**8. Avoid what gets you muted.** Engagement bait, “like if you agree”, posting off-topic and reposting the same text earn “not interested” and mutes, which weigh heavily against you. X’s spam rules also label clusters of near-identical text.

**9. Reply to bigger accounts in your niche.** A useful reply under a popular post is shown to that post’s readers. Add something specific, not “great point”.

What not to do: buy followers or engagement. It doesn’t make strangers react, and X’s rules ban artificial amplification. See [why buying Twitter followers backfires](https://kalen.si/blog/buy-twitter-followers).

## How do you check if your impressions are going up?

Compare your posts with your own median, not with other accounts. Once a week, look at the impressions of your last 20 to 30 posts, take the median, and mark the posts well above it. Then look at what they share: topic, first line, format, time. Your [engagement rate](https://kalen.si/blog/twitter-engagement-rate) and [X analytics](https://kalen.si/blog/x-analytics) show the rest. ## Where does Kalen fit?

[Kalen](https://kalen.si/) is an X assistant that plugs into Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Claude Code through MCP. He does the research part of this list every day: the day’s top posts for your keywords, X trends, and once a week the most popular posts of your reference accounts and your own. Your AI writes the posts from that briefing; Kalen runs no writing model.

He scores each draft from 0 to 100 against what works in your niche and your own best posts, and sends weak drafts back for up to 3 rewrites. He also warns when posts land too close together or repeat your own recent text. Nothing is scheduled until you say yes in the chat, and the link goes in the first reply.

A post costs 1 credit, 2 with a link or a first reply. Starter is $9/month (100 credits), Pro $29/month (700), Ultra $49/month (1,500). Your first plan starts with 7 days free and its full monthly credits; cancel before the trial ends and nothing is charged. See [pricing](https://kalen.si/#pricing).

## FAQ

### Do impressions count if someone just scrolls past?

Yes. An impression is counted when the post is shown on screen, read or not. That’s why replies and follows tell you more about a post than impressions alone.

### Does X Premium increase impressions?

X’s Premium page says subscribers get a boost in replies. It can help a good post travel further; it won’t fix a post nobody reacts to. See [X Premium tiers](https://kalen.si/blog/x-premium).

### Do hashtags increase impressions on Twitter?

Rarely. One relevant hashtag can help a post show up in search for an event, but X reads what a post is about from its text. More in [Twitter hashtags](https://kalen.si/blog/twitter-hashtags).

### How long does a tweet keep getting impressions?

Most impressions come in the first hours. The published code filters posts older than 48 hours out of For You, so a post has about two days to find its audience there.
