**Short answer:** Twitter hashtags still work on X, but they do less than they used to. X finds the topic of a post from its words, so a hashtag rarely adds reach on its own. Use **one hashtag, at most two**, and only when people follow that tag on purpose: a live event, a conference, a chat with a set tag. For everyday posts, leave them out.

This guide covers what a hashtag does on X today, what X itself recommends, when one helps, when it hurts, and how to find the right one.

## What do Twitter hashtags do on X today?

A hashtag is a word or phrase after a # sign, like #buildinpublic. On X it does three things:

1. **It becomes a link.** Tap it and you see other posts with the same tag.
2. **It shows up in search.** Public posts with a hashtag can appear in the search results for that tag.
3. **It can trend.** Popular hashtags can show up in Explore as a trend.

That is all a hashtag does. It doesn’t tell the algorithm who should see the post. X reads the words of the post and how people react to it. [How the X algorithm works](https://kalen.si/blog/x-algorithm) covers what it does weigh.

## How many hashtags should you use on X?

X’s own help page, [How to use hashtags](https://help.x.com/en/using-x/how-to-use-hashtags), recommends **no more than two hashtags per post**. X doesn’t enforce that limit.

In practice, one is enough. Each hashtag also costs characters: the # sign and every letter count toward the 280-character limit ([every X limit in one place](https://kalen.si/blog/twitter-character-limit)).

## Did Elon Musk say to stop using hashtags?

Yes. In December 2024 he posted: “Please stop using hashtags. The system doesn’t need them anymore and they look ugly.” [Fox 5 DC covered the post](https://www.fox5dc.com/news/hashtags-x-elon-musk-says-please-stop-using-them).

The “system doesn’t need them” part matches how X works now: it understands a post’s topic without a tag. It is not a rule. Hashtags still work as links and in search. They just stopped being the way to get found.

## Do hashtags help or hurt reach on X?

They help in a few cases and hurt in more.

| Situation | Use a hashtag? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A live event, a conference, a sports game | Yes, the official tag | People search and follow that tag while it happens |
| A recurring chat with a set tag | Yes | The tag is how the group finds each other |
| A campaign or contest you run | Yes, one branded tag | You can collect the entries in one search |
| A normal post about your work | No | The words already tell X the topic |
| A reply to someone else | No | It reads as spam in a conversation |
| A trend that has nothing to do with the post | Never | Hijacking a trend breaks X’s spam rules |

The wrong hashtag can cost you. Several tags at the end of a post look like a bot or an ad. Readers scroll past, and a post nobody stops for gets little reach.

Replies show the same pattern. When Kalen studied the most-liked replies to big posts across 12 niches in October 2026, hashtags showed up in about 1% of the winning replies. In several niches the number was zero.

## Where should a hashtag go in a post?

X says a hashtag can go anywhere in a post. Two placements read well:

- **Inside the sentence**, when the tag is a word you would write anyway: “Shipping the beta of my #indiehacker newsletter tool today.”
- **At the end, alone**, for an event: “Notes from the keynote below. #WWDC”

Avoid a block of tags at the bottom. Keep tags short, with no spaces or punctuation inside, since those break the tag. Capitalizing each word (#BuildInPublic) makes long tags easier to read.

## How do you find the right hashtag on X?

Look before you tag. Three free ways:

1. **Search the tag on x.com.** Open the Latest tab. If the newest posts are hours old or look like spam, nobody is following it.
2. **Check Explore.** Trends shows what’s surging now, for you or for a place you choose. [Twitter trends](https://kalen.si/blog/twitter-trends) explains how to read them.
3. **Watch the accounts in your niche.** If the people you want to reach never use a tag, you don’t need it either.

The third way takes the most time, because you have to scroll through a lot of posts. That is the part Kalen does for you.

## How does Kalen help with what to post on X?

Kalen is an X assistant that works inside Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and Claude Code. Hashtags are a small part of a post. What makes people stop is what the post says, and that is what he researches.

- **Every day** he looks at the top posts in your niche and X trends, and each week the most popular posts of the accounts you follow as references.
- **Your AI writes** the posts from that briefing, in your voice. Kalen never runs a writing model.
- **He scores each draft** from 0 to 100 against what works in your niche, and flags the weak ones for a rewrite.
- **After you approve**, he schedules and publishes them on X, up to 3 weeks ahead.

Plans start at $9 a month for 100 credits (1 credit a post). Every plan starts with a 14-day free trial with 50 credits: cancel before it ends and nothing is charged.

## FAQ

### Are hashtags still used on Twitter?

Yes, but mostly for live events, chats and campaigns. For everyday posts most accounts have dropped them, because X finds a post’s topic from its words.

### How many hashtags should I use on X?

One, at most two. X’s help center recommends no more than two per post.

### Do hashtags increase reach on X?

Only when people follow that tag on purpose, like during an event. Otherwise they add little, and several tags can make a post look like spam.

### Should I put hashtags in replies?

No. Hashtags were in about 1% of the most-liked replies Kalen studied in October 2026.

### Can I use a trending hashtag that isn’t related to my post?

No. Adding an unrelated trending tag to borrow its reach is against X’s platform manipulation and spam policy.
