X Character Limit: How URLs, Emoji and Spaces Count

Kalen · · 4 min read

A post on X can be up to 280 weighted characters on a standard account. “Weighted” is the part that trips people up. Every link counts as 23 characters, however long it is. Most emoji count as 2, and so do Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters. Plain Latin letters, digits and spaces count as 1. X Premium accounts can post longer text, but most posts in most niches stay well under 280.

Why does my post say it’s too long?

You wrote 270 characters in your notes app, pasted it into X, and the counter went red. Or a tool rejected your post as too long when it looked fine. Almost always, one of three things happened:

  • A link. A long URL might count for less than you expected, or a short one for more. Either way it’s 23.
  • Emoji. Each one counts as 2.
  • A non-Latin script. Text in Chinese, Japanese or Korean counts as 2 per character.

The cost is small but annoying: a post you have to cut at the last minute, often by removing the part that made it specific.

How does X count characters?

X’s developer docs describe the rule as 280 weighted characters, with URLs counting 23. In practice:

What you type How it counts
Latin letters, digits, spaces, punctuation 1 each
Line breaks 1 each
Any URL (shortened to t.co by X) 23, whatever its real length
Most emoji 2 each
Chinese, Japanese, Korean characters 2 each
Attached images, GIFs or video 0

X wraps every link in its own t.co short link, which is why every URL counts the same. A 15-character link costs you 23. A 200-character link with tracking parameters also costs 23.

How do you fit a post in 280 characters?

Cut in this order, from cheapest to most expensive to lose, because the early items rarely carry meaning and the last ones often do:

  1. Filler openings. “I’ve been thinking a lot about” and “Here’s the thing:” can go.
  2. Hedges. “Kind of”, “a little bit”, “in my opinion” rarely add anything.
  3. Doubled words. “Simple and easy”, “quick and fast” pick one.
  4. The link. Move it to a first reply and get 23 characters back plus a space. See putting your link in the first reply.
  5. Emoji. Each one you remove saves 2.
  6. A second idea. If the post makes two points, it may be two posts.

What you shouldn’t cut is the specific part: the number, the example, the name of the thing. That’s what makes a post worth reading.

Does the first reply have its own limit?

Yes. A reply is a separate post with its own 280. That’s useful: the post carries the idea, the reply carries the link and a line of context, and neither has to squeeze.

How long should a post be, then?

The limit is a ceiling, not a target. Many strong posts are one or two lines. Look at the top posts in your niche: if most are short, a 270-character block will feel heavy next to them. Kalen’s daily research measures this for your niche, including the median length of the top posts. He passes it to your AI before it writes, so your drafts match what your readers already read. Find what works in your niche on X shows how to check by hand.

What about long posts on X Premium?

Premium subscribers can post much longer text, and a long post shows a “Show more” cut in the timeline. If you write long posts, the first lines before the cut do the work a full short post would. Kalen keeps every post within the standard 280 so it works on any account.

How do tools count?

Good tools count the way X does. Kalen checks every post and every first reply with X’s weighting (URLs as 23, emoji and CJK as 2) before it schedules anything, so a post doesn’t fail at publish time for being too long. If you write with Claude or ChatGPT directly, ask it to keep each post under 250 characters to leave room, and remember that the AI’s own count may not match X’s for links and emoji. Writing X posts with ChatGPT and Claude has prompts that handle this.

If you write long posts on X Premium, Kalen isn’t for you: he keeps every post within 280. For short posts, his length check saves the last-minute trim.

FAQ

Do spaces count toward the X character limit?
Yes, each space counts as 1.

Does a link always count as 23 characters?
Yes. X shortens every link to a t.co link, so any URL counts as 23.

Do images reduce my character count?
No. Attached media don’t count toward the 280.

Do hashtags count?
Yes, character by character, including the # sign. A cashtag ($ followed by a ticker) counts the same way. Note that apps posting through the X API can include at most one cashtag per post.
