How to Schedule Posts on X: 3 Ways Compared
You can schedule posts on X three ways. Use the scheduler built into x.com on desktop, a third-party scheduling tool, or your AI chat with an MCP server like Kalen. The built-in scheduler is fine for a few posts. A tool helps when you plan a week at a time. Scheduling from your AI makes sense when your AI already writes your drafts and you want them to go straight into a queue.
Why schedule posts at all?
Posting by hand ties your X presence to your free time. On a busy day nothing goes out, and the streak breaks. Writing a week of posts in one sitting and scheduling them separates the writing from the posting, because the writing needs focus and the posting only needs the right time. It also lets you post when your readers are online, not when you happen to be free. See the best time to post on X.
Option 1: The x.com scheduler
On x.com in a desktop browser:
- Click Post and write your post.
- Click the schedule icon (a calendar with a clock) below the text box.
- Pick the date and time, then click Confirm.
- Click Schedule.
To see or edit scheduled posts, open the post box, click Drafts or Unsent posts, then the Scheduled tab. Options and labels can change as X updates its interface.
Good for: a few posts a week. Limits: one post at a time, and you can’t schedule a reply to a post that hasn’t gone out yet.
Option 2: A scheduling tool
Third-party schedulers connect to your X account and add a calendar view, queues and team features. Most publish through X’s API.
Good for: planning a week or a month, teams, several accounts. Limits: you still write every post yourself, or paste it in from an AI. Posting through the API also has costs on X’s side: under the pay-per-use plan, X’s developer docs list $0.015 per post and $0.20 per post with a URL. Tools pass that on somehow; see X API pricing per post.
Option 3: Schedule from your AI chat with Kalen
If you already ask Claude or ChatGPT to draft your posts, Kalen removes the copy and paste. He’s an MCP server, so your AI calls him directly.
- Connect Kalen to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Claude Code. The setup guide covers each app.
- Connect X and set your profile: niche and keywords, reference accounts, time zone, posting window and tone.
- Ask: “Plan my X posts for next week with Kalen.”
- Your AI gets Kalen’s briefing and your open time slots, writes the drafts, and Kalen scores each one. Weak drafts go back for a rewrite, up to three rounds.
- Review the week in the chat. Change, cut or move anything.
- Say yes. Only then does Kalen schedule the posts. At each slot, he publishes through the official X API.
Approved posts show in the Queue page of your account, and you can ask your AI “what’s scheduled for Thursday?” at any time.
How do the three compare?
| x.com scheduler | Scheduling tool | Kalen from your AI chat | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who writes | You | You | Your AI, from Kalen’s briefing |
| Research of your niche | No | Varies | Daily: top posts, trends, references |
| Draft scoring | No | Varies | 0 to 100 against your niche |
| First reply with link | No | Varies | Yes, optional per post |
| How far ahead | Set by X | Varies | Up to 21 days |
| Cost | Free | Varies | Starter $29/mo, Pro $49/mo |
What rules apply to scheduled posts?
Kalen checks these before anything is queued:
- Length: 280 as X counts it, with links as 23 characters. See X’s character limit.
- No @mentions of other accounts, because X restricts automated mentions.
- One cashtag per post at most.
- Up to 21 days ahead, and at least a few minutes from now.
- Moment posts that react to the day’s news only within 48 hours.
- No duplicates of a post queued or published in the last 30 days, since X rejects identical text.
- Media: JPG, PNG or WebP up to 5 MB, GIF up to 15 MB, MP4 up to 50 MB, up to 4 per post.
- Daily limits: 20 posts a day on both plans (a first reply counts as a post), with 2 link posts a day on Starter and 4 on Pro.
How do you change or cancel a scheduled post?
On x.com, open the Scheduled tab, pick the post and edit or delete it. In Kalen, ask your AI to change the text, time or reply of a post, or to cancel it; a cancel asks for your confirmation first. You can also cancel from the Queue page. Changed text is scored again.
If you schedule a handful of posts a week and write them yourself, the free x.com scheduler is the right choice and Kalen would be overkill. Pick Kalen when your AI already writes your drafts and you want research and scoring in the same chat.
FAQ
Can I schedule posts on the X mobile app?
Scheduling has been available mainly on x.com in a desktop browser. Check the post box in your app for the schedule icon.
Can I schedule a thread?
The x.com scheduler handles single posts. Kalen schedules single posts with an optional first reply; longer threads are best posted by hand. See how to write a Twitter thread.
Is there a free way to schedule with Kalen?
No. X charges for every post an app publishes, so Kalen has no free plan that posts. You can connect X, set your profile and score a few drafts without a plan.
What happens if X is down at the scheduled time?
Kalen retries with backoff, and a post that still fails shows up with a message so you can reschedule it.
Pick your option
Start with the option that fits your week. For a handful of posts, use x.com. For a scored week from your AI chat, see Kalen’s plans and connect him in a few minutes.
