X API Pricing per Post, Explained for Creators
On X’s pay-per-use API plan, creating a post costs $0.015, and since April 2026 a post that contains a URL costs $0.20, according to X’s developer docs (checked October 2026). Replies to other people’s posts that the app was summoned to cost $0.010. These prices apply to apps that post for you through the official API, not to posting by hand in the X app. X notes that prices are subject to change, and its Developer Console is the authoritative source.
Why should a creator care about API prices?
You don’t pay X when you post from the app. But any tool that posts for you through the official API pays X per post. That cost ends up in what the tool charges you or in the limits it sets. Knowing the numbers explains a few things that otherwise look odd: why link posts are capped, why some tools have no free tier, and why a “first reply with a link” doesn’t save money.
What are the X API post prices?
From X’s pay-per-use pricing page:
| Action through the API | Price per request |
|---|---|
| Create a post | $0.015 |
| Create a post that contains a URL | $0.200 |
| Create a reply the app was summoned to | $0.010 |
| Add media metadata (such as alt text) | $0.005 |
The model is prepaid credits with no subscription. When an app’s credits run out, X blocks its requests until more are added.
What counts as a “post with a URL”?
Any link in the text that X turns into a t.co link counts. X’s docs don’t spell out every edge case, such as a bare domain that X auto-links, so the safe assumption is that anything X treats as a link is billed at $0.20.
Does a link in the first reply cost less?
X’s docs don’t say so. The lower $0.010 price is for summoned replies: replies to someone who mentioned or quoted the app’s account. A reply in your own thread isn’t summoned. X’s docs don’t say how self-replies with a link are billed, so the safe assumption is $0.20, the same as a post with a URL.
There are still good reasons to put the link in the first reply. They’re about writing and reach, not price. See putting your link in the first reply.
What does a week of posting cost through the API?
A simple way to estimate, using X’s prices:
| Weekly plan | Calculation | X’s charge |
|---|---|---|
| 28 posts, no links | 28 × $0.015 | $0.42 |
| 28 posts, 7 with a link | 21 × $0.015 + 7 × $0.20 | $1.715 |
| 28 posts, each with a link in a first reply | 28 × $0.015 + 28 × $0.20 | $6.02 |
Links dominate the bill. Posts without links are cheap; a link post costs over 13 times a plain one. That’s the number every tool that publishes for you has to plan around.
What other API rules affect posting?
Price isn’t the only constraint. X’s docs and developer forum also set rules for self-serve apps:
- Replies to others only when summoned. An app can’t reply to a stranger’s post unless that person mentioned or quoted its account. Replies in your own thread are allowed.
- Mentions are restricted. X staff have said on the developer forum that apps sending unsolicited @mentions were blocked from posting.
- At most one cashtag per post.
- Quote posts through the API are limited to X’s enterprise plan.
How does this shape Kalen’s plans?
Kalen publishes through the official X API on pay-per-use, so every post he publishes is paid to X. That’s why:
- There’s no free plan that posts. Without a plan you can connect X, set your profile and score a few drafts. Scheduling needs a plan.
- Link posts have their own daily limit. Starter ($29/mo) includes 20 posts a day and 2 link posts a day. Pro ($49/mo) keeps 20 posts a day and raises link posts to 4.
- A first reply counts as a post, and a link anywhere (post, reply or link field) makes it a link post.
- Drafts, cancelled and failed posts don’t count, so a failed post can be rescheduled the same day.

Should you avoid links, then?
Keep them, but place them where they earn it, so each link post sends readers somewhere worth the click: a launch, a long article, a product page. Write the post so it stands on its own, and treat the link as an extra for people who want more. Most of your week can be posts that teach or tell a story without leaving X. How often should you post on X covers how to build that mix.
Kalen isn’t the cheapest way to post. Posting by hand in the X app is free. If you only need a few scheduled posts a week, use the x.com scheduler. Kalen’s price covers the X fees plus the daily research and scoring, so he only makes sense if you use those.
FAQ
Is the X API free for posting?
Not on pay-per-use. Each post costs $0.015, or $0.20 with a URL, per X’s developer docs.
Do I pay X directly when I use a scheduling tool?
Not with Kalen: he pays X from his own developer account and you pay for a plan. Other tools set their own terms, so check each one.
Do images cost extra?
Uploading media isn’t listed as a charge on X’s pricing page. Adding alt text through the API is $0.005.
Will these prices change?
X says prices are subject to change. Check the Developer Console for current rates.
