How to Use X (Twitter): A Beginner's Guide for 2026

Kalen · · 5 min read

Short answer: X, the app formerly called Twitter, is a public feed of short posts. To use it well: set up a profile that says what you post about, follow 30 to 50 accounts in one topic, read your feed for a few days, then post once a day and reply to people in that topic. Most of what you learn on X comes from replies, not from your own posts.

This guide walks through each step, from your first login to a daily habit.

What is X (Twitter)?

X is a social network built on short public posts. Twitter was renamed X in 2023. The posts used to be called tweets, and most people still say tweet.

What makes X different from Instagram or LinkedIn:

  • Text first. Most posts are a few lines of text. Photos and videos are optional.
  • Public by default. Anyone can read your posts and reply, even people who don’t follow you.
  • Fast. News, launches and opinions show up on X first, and the feed moves every minute.
  • Replies matter. A good reply under a popular post can get more views than your own post.

How do you set up an X account?

  1. Sign up at x.com or in the X app with an email or phone number.
  2. Pick a handle (@name) that’s short and easy to say. You can change it later.
  3. Add a profile photo. A clear face works best for a personal account.
  4. Write a bio that says what you post about, in one sentence. “Founder of a design studio. Posts about pricing and clients” beats “Dreamer. Coffee lover.”
  5. Add a header image and a link to your site, if you have one.

Your profile is what people check before they follow you. If it doesn’t say what they’ll get, they won’t follow.

Who should you follow first?

Your feed is only as good as the accounts you follow. Start small and specific:

  • Follow 30 to 50 accounts in one topic you care about.
  • Use X search with words from your topic and switch to the Top tab to find active accounts.
  • Look at who those accounts reply to. That’s where the rest of the topic lives.
  • Make a List for the accounts you never want to miss, and pin it as a tab.

X has two feeds: For You, picked by X’s algorithm, and Following, in time order from the accounts you follow. Use Following for the first few weeks so you see what your topic actually posts.

What should your first tweet be?

Your first post doesn’t need to go viral. It needs to tell people why to follow you. Good first posts:

First post idea Example shape
An introduction with a promise “I run [what you do]. I’ll post about [topic] here: what works, what doesn’t.”
One lesson from your work “The one thing I’d tell anyone starting [your field]: [lesson].”
A question to your topic “People who [do your thing]: what’s one tool you’d never drop?”
Something you made A screenshot or photo of your work with one line about it

Then pin it to your profile, so new visitors see it first. Tweet Ideas has 40 more ideas for the weeks after.

How do you write a good post on X?

  • The first line does the work. It’s the only line most people read before they decide to stop scrolling. Twitter Hooks shows 12 patterns.
  • One idea per post. If you have three points, write three posts or a thread.
  • Plain words, short sentences. X is read fast, on a phone.
  • Keep links out of the post. Put the link in the first reply instead. Here’s why.
  • Stay under the limit. A post is 280 characters on a free account. Every X limit is in one place.

How do replies, reposts and likes work?

  • Reply: your answer under someone’s post. Everyone reading that post can see it. This is how new people find you.
  • Repost: shares someone’s post to your followers as is.
  • Quote: shares the post with your comment on top.
  • Like: a signal to the author and to X’s algorithm. It doesn’t show your followers anything.
  • Bookmark: saves a post privately for later.

When you’re new, replies are worth more than your own posts. Spend 15 minutes a day writing useful replies under bigger accounts in your topic.

How often should you post on X?

Once a day is enough to start. Consistency matters more than volume: one post every day for a month teaches you more than 20 posts in one weekend. As you learn what your readers like, you can go to 2 or 3 a day. How Often Should You Post on X goes deeper.

Look at your X analytics once a week. Find the posts that got the most replies and write more like them.

How do you keep posting every day?

Most beginners stop after a week. The usual reasons are running out of ideas and not having time at the right hour.

Two habits fix most of it:

  1. Write in batches. Write the week’s posts in one sitting.
  2. Schedule them. The x.com composer has a free scheduler for single posts. How to Schedule Tweets on X shows how.

If you already use Claude or ChatGPT, Kalen handles the daily part from your chat.
