Twitter Character Limit: Every X Limit in One Place
The Twitter character limit for a post is 280 characters on a standard X account, and X Premium subscribers can post up to 25,000. The X character limit is weighted, though: emoji and Chinese, Japanese or Korean characters count as 2, and every link counts as 23, whatever its length. Replies have the same 280 limit as posts, while your bio, name, username, DMs and image descriptions each have their own.
Here is every limit in one place, how X counts, and how to write within it.
What are all the X character limits?
| Where | Limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Post (standard account) | 280 | Weighted count, see below |
| Post (X Premium) | 25,000 | Long posts show a “Show more” cut in the feed |
| Reply | 280 (25,000 with Premium) | A reply is a post |
| Each post in a thread | 280 (25,000 with Premium) | Every post in the chain has its own limit |
| Direct message | 10,000 | As widely reported; X’s help pages don’t state it |
| Bio | 160 | Same on Premium, per third-party guides |
| Display name | 50 | The name shown above your handle |
| Username (@handle) | 4 to 15 | Letters, numbers and underscores |
| Image description (alt text) | 1,000 | Per image, from X’s API reference |
| Poll choice | 25 | Per option, up to 4 options |
Sources: X’s developer docs for posts and alt text; X’s help center for long posts, usernames, display names and polls. Where a number comes only from third-party guides, the table says so. X changes these from time to time, so if a field stops you at a different number, the app is right.
How does X count characters?
X’s developer docs describe the 280 as weighted characters, not letters:
| What you type | Counts as |
|---|---|
| Latin letters, digits, spaces, punctuation | 1 each |
| Line breaks | 1 each |
| Emoji (including combined ones like family emoji) | 2 each |
| Chinese, Japanese, Korean characters | 2 each |
| Any link | 23, because X wraps it in a t.co link |
| Attached images, GIFs, video | 0 |
So a post written entirely in emoji tops out at 140, and so does one written entirely in Japanese. A 15-character link costs 23, and so does a 200-character one with tracking parameters. The full walkthrough of links is in X character limit: how URLs count.
Do mentions and hashtags count? Yes, character by character, including the @ and # signs. Apps that post through the X API can include at most one cashtag per post (what the X API allows).
Is the X character limit different with Premium?
Yes for posts and replies, no for your profile. X’s help center says Premium subscribers can write posts up to 25,000 characters, with formatting such as bold and italics, and everyone can read them. Your bio stays at 160 and your handle at 15. X Premium tiers and price covers what else each tier includes.
Two things to keep in mind with long posts:
- The cut matters most. In the timeline, readers see the first lines and a “Show more” link. Those first lines have to do the work a full short post would. Twitter hooks examples helps here.
- Not every tool supports them. Some schedulers and apps keep every post to 280 so it works on any account.
Why does X say my post is too long?
Almost always one of these:
- A link. It counts as 23, not its visible length.
- Emoji. Each one counts as 2.
- Non-Latin script. CJK characters count as 2.
- Pasted text with hidden characters, like extra line breaks or spaces from a notes app.
- You lost Premium and are back to 280.
Fix it in this order, cheapest first: filler openings (“Here’s the thing:”), hedges (“kind of”, “in my opinion”), doubled words, then move the link to a first reply. A reply has its own 280, so the post keeps the idea and the reply carries the link. More on that in putting your link in the first reply.
How long should a post on X be?
The limit is a ceiling, not a target. Many strong posts are one or two lines, and a 270-character block can feel heavy next to them. Look at the top posts in your niche this week and match their length, not the maximum. Find what works in your niche on X shows how to check by hand.
If an idea doesn’t fit, it may be two posts, or a thread. How to write a Twitter thread covers the second option.
If you write with Claude or ChatGPT, ask for posts under 250 characters to leave room, and remember the AI’s count may not match X’s for links and emoji. Writing X posts with ChatGPT and Claude has prompts that handle it.
How does Kalen handle the limit?
Kalen is an X assistant that connects to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Claude Code through MCP. Your AI writes the posts; Kalen runs no writing model.
- He checks length the way X does. Every post and every first reply is checked against the 280 with X’s weighting (links as 23, emoji and CJK as 2) before it’s scheduled, so nothing fails at publish time. Kalen keeps every post within 280 and doesn’t publish Premium long posts.
- He researches your niche every day, the day’s top posts for your keywords and X trends, so your AI sees what length and format work in your niche.
- He scores every draft from 0 to 100 against your niche and your own best posts, with up to 3 rewrites for weak ones.
- Nothing is scheduled until you say yes in the chat. Posts go out through the official X API, links always in the first reply.
A post costs 1 credit, 2 with a first reply or a link. Starter is $9/month (100 credits), Pro $29/month (700), Ultra $49/month (1,500), each starting with 14 days free and 50 credits. Cancel before the trial ends and nothing is charged. See pricing.
If you write long posts on Premium, Kalen isn’t the right tool for those.
